Empowering families English classes for the community Offering English classes to the community is a great way to reach out to people.
Learning English encourages them to dev- elop abilities that will help them obtain better work, and assists them in better providing for their families. Classes are made available for adults and children
History The English language ministry began when the then director, Alejandro Martinez, was asked by various persons in the community for classes to help them better understand English.
They came because it was a requirement for them to have a certain proficiency in their work or in their schooling. |

Classes started with adults and grew to reach out to children as well. At the height of this ministry, 35 children and 15 adults were being helped through these classes. Currently, we have suspended the classes as we look for someone who can head up this ministry.

To give you a brief idea of how the ministry was run through the years it was in operation, we have shared the basic structure here with you.
Education program
English classes are normally held each Saturday from 10:00 to midday. There are three separate classes, two for adults and one for children, a conversation class for the more advanced adults and a beginner level class. The English classes are presented to allow a basic understanding of the English language to the students. Many of the students had some language understanding of their own or have lived in the United States. Private classes are also available upon request.
The Class Learning Structure
For the children’s English classes, we begin our time together with games and English learning songs. Then letter recognition work to help with formulating the proper sounds of letters. This will prepare a good foundation for them in the language. We also play different games and read books aloud to help them recognize the proper pronunciation of words. The children are also encouraged to talk in English about different animals and foods, then time for new words and homework.
To finish, we sing our songs again and work on articles of clothing and parts of the body.
Adult classes consist of teaching basic vocab- ulary and the conjugation of verbs. Emphasis is given to conversational English.
The goal is to provide instruction by and interaction with teachers whose first language is English so that proper pronunciation can be achieved.
The adult classes are separated into two groups: those who have no understanding of English, and those who have some understanding of English. Those who already have an English knowledge work mostly in conversation talking about things around them or carrying on a normal conversation and stopping to ask questions when they don’t know a word or don’t understand the sentence structure. The classes for those who don’t know any English yet are more structured lectures and interactions that focus on basic grammar, vocabulary, phonetics and translation.
