Mission to children
The community of Camichines

The mercy ministry of Eirene has now esta-
blished a Children's Shelter Ministry in the
rural community of Camichines.

Camichines is located in the county of
Cocula, in the state of Jalisco, Mexico.

Camichines is a beautiful rancho (small
town) located in the valley of the Western
Sierra Madre mountains.  A Camichin is a
type of tree that used to grow in abund-
ance here, so the town is named after the
trees.

Casa Hogar Eirene, A.C., was established in
hopes of counter-acting the negative social
conditions impacting the community.

The people and the needs of
Camichines

According to the last census (2006) there were about 950 people living in Camichines, but there are actually less.  Many of the people counted in the census actually live in the United States.  Also, in Camichines, animals (especially dogs and roosters which are usually in the streets) outnumber the people.

The roads are made of cobblestone.  There is running water, a sewage system, electricity, and dial-up internet.  There are no major grocery stores, only small corner stores.  Almost everything that is not found in the little stores can be purchased from vendors who drive thru town in pick up trucks.  Tortillas, fruit, vegetables, sweet bread, chicken, liquid propane gas, water for drinking, cleaning supplies, clothes, shoes, and even brooms are announced.  A person has only to go out their front door to purchase desired items.

Camichines has many of the common city problems as well as others.  Alcoholism and drugs
are prevalent.  Many children grow up without a father due to alcohol or drug issues or more commonly due to fathers heading north to acquire the American Dream, leaving wife and children behind.  This causes the typical problems that fatherless children face.

The public education is available in town only through ninth grade.  Few opt for busing to nearby Cocula for high school education.  The quality of the education is sub-standard.

How do you fix these problems?

Eirene Ministry is a mercy ministry for com-
munities in Guadalajara, and Camichines is
one of these communities.

To help provide solutions and offer lasting
change,  Eirene Ministry has established an
Children's Shelter Ministry in Camichines.

Casa Hogar Eirene, A.C., is the first, and so
far only, children's shelter in the county.

It, along with the other ministries provided
by the Acosta family, through Christ, was
established in hopes of counter-acting the
negative social conditions impacting the
community.
