Make a difference, reaching the community Community outreach projects
The mercy ministry of Eirene continually looks for new opportunities to reach out to meet needs of those within the commun- ities we serve and to reach new commun- ities as well.
On a continual basis, donations of food and clothing are received, which are given to families in need.
Through the varied ministries of the school, dentist and and various programs at our site in Camichines, we look for opportunities to further minister to physical and spiritual needs of families.
You can also be apart of our community outreach program, you don't have to become a missionary and leave your job or country to make the difference.

Stories of Community Outreach
The following are two of the many different opportunities that we had to reach out in our community. One was with a neighbor of our old Eirene offices, Oscar, and his family, and the other was with Francisco and Maria.
The story of Oscar
Oscar Oscar and his sister were both in their twenties and both suffered from kidney problems. Oscar´s case was such that he was confined to a wheelchair. We went to visit this family when Dr. Kevin and Jill Wilson visited from the United States. Kevin was stressing to Oscar the importance, for his health, for him to be getting a certain amount of sun each day.
Oscar had not been going outside in the sun like he should and when we looked at his backyard, we understood one of the reasons why. There was trash all through the backyard and not one bit of grass.
After talking with his mother, we offered to clean out the backyard of the trash, finish the privacy wall, and plant some grass in order to give Oscar a pleasant place where he could get some sun. We were able to complete this work for Oscar and you can see the results in the pictures on the below by placing your mouse of the images.

We were able to minister to Oscar and his family through taking him to the hospital, food donations, visits to the homeopathic doctor and spending time with them. In March of 2007, Oscar passed away and left behind his mother and 9 year old nephew.
(We continued to visit with this family and have been able, through some generous friends, to bring Christmas gifts and food to them. In 2008, his mother passed away from an alcohol-related heart attack, leaving behind Oscar’s nephew, who has since gone to live with his uncle.
Unfortunately, family stories like this are all too common. This gives you a glimpse into the medical difficulties we see, the issues with alcohol and the challenges we face as we seek to minister. Together we can make a difference, with your support we can help others like Oscar in the future, please join us today as a support member.)
The story of Francisco and Maria
Francisco Francisco and Maria were referred to us by DIF, which is the government family agency. They needed assistance with housing and possibly with food as well. The government could not help them because they did not have a social security status with them and no proof of birth certificates. We went to visit them to see what their situation was like and assess how we could best help them.
At the time, Francisco was 92 and his wife was somewhat younger with diabetes. The house that they were living in was one that Francisco had built from scraps taken from the trash. They were living on a property that was owned by their daughter, but she did not have any money to build them any proper shelter.
Before & after - rollover with your mouse All the property contained was a tank for the water and some metal set up for the structure of a building. The day of our first meeting, we had a wonderful visit with them and learned a lot about contentment. Not once, did they complain about their situation. They were more than happy to welcome us into their home to visit and share their story with us.
After our meeting, we received a generous donation of materials and were able to construct a new home for Francisco and Maria, which you can see the before and after photos to the left by placing your mouse of the image.
(Unfortunately, due to reasons unknown to us, Francisco and Maria had to leave this property, and, sadly, the house that we put up for Francisco and Maria was sold out from under them by a relative. They were given a third of the proceeds and moved to another home.)
This story highlights for us the great need for working with families to educate them in a different values system. It shows us the importance of working with children, from a young age, to teach them respect, love and responsibility. While this story has a sad physical ending, the spiritual ending is much happier. Francisco and Maria were connected to members of the local church who were able to lead them to a saving knowledge in Christ before they both passed away.
